Reduction mammoplasty
(breast reduction)

Not all women are happy with large, voluminous breasts. In some situations it looks disproportionate and seriously affects the physical condition of the woman. Therefore, in such cases plastic surgery can be applied - reduction of the volume and size of the breasts is performed, often simultaneously with skin tightening, correction of areola and nipple area.

Breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size and correcting the shape of the breasts in women. The doctor can reduce the bust by several sizes (according to the patient's wishes and indications). The effect is achieved because the surgeon excises part of the breast tissue itself and removes fatty layers.

INDICATIONS FOR SURGICAL BREAST REDUCTION

In most cases, breast reduction surgery in women is performed in the presence of medical problems. Some women decide to have an intervention for aesthetic reasons, especially in the presence of additional factors - age-related changes, dramatic weight fluctuations. The doctor may recommend breast reduction surgery if there are:

• persistent maceration (mucous), inflammation of the skin in the folds under the breasts;
• limitation of mobility, activity due to an overly large bust;
• glandular pressure on the chest, sleep problems;
• Uneven stress on the spine, which leads to pain in the neck and thoracic spine;
• friction, irritation in the shoulder area from the bra straps;
• respiratory disorders, the presence of shortness of breath;
• dissatisfaction with the size and appearance of the bust.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Breast reduction procedure is not performed if there are a number of contraindications, which are determined during the consultation and examination. These include:

• Under 18 years of age;
• pregnancy and lactation period, planning pregnancy and breastfeeding in the future;
• diseases of the mammary glands, infections, pathologies of internal organs (until a complete cure);
• severe obesity;
• Problems with wound healing, tendency to keloid scars;
• disorders of the blood system;
• diabetes mellitus at the decompensation stage;
• any form of cancer;
• mental disorders, depression;
• febrile syndrome.

Additional contraindications may be determined after consultation with a plastic surgeon and preliminary examination.

PREPARATION

First of all, you must have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to find out how much it will cost to reduce the breast, what tests and examinations are necessary before surgery, and what you need to prepare for the intervention. Before the breast reduction surgery in our clinic, you will need to consult with a therapist and a mammologist, anesthesiologist to rule out possible contraindications. Also performed laboratory tests and instrumental studies: urinalysis, blood, biochemistry, coagulogram, photofluorography, breast ultrasound, mammography, ECG. Then the date of surgery is appointed and preparation for the intervention is carried out.

A week before surgery you need to cancel drugs that affect clotting, hormones, birth control, you need to give up alcohol and smoking, 8-10 hours before surgery should refrain from eating, 4 hours - from taking liquids.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUES

The choice of surgical technique depends on the condition and size of the breasts and how much volume needs to be reduced and how much initial sagging of the breasts. The price of breast reduction surgery will also depend on this.

Breast reduction surgery can be performed with a periareolar incision. Tissue reduction is performed with incisions along the edge of the breast areola.

Keyhole-type surgery is performed with incisions along the edge of the nipple, which then descends vertically across the breast.

Anchor surgery with the formation of a T-shaped incision running from the edge of the areola vertically down to the folds under the breast. This method is most commonly used by doctors.

With any access selected, breast reduction surgery is performed in a certain order. The doctor examines and marks the breasts, and then premedicates and anesthesia is administered. Then the plastic surgeon performs all stages of surgery, which ends with the imposition of sutures, wound care and sterile dressings. After the surgery, the patient is fitted with a compression garment to support the tissues and form the correct shape of the breast as much as possible.

RECOVERY

During the first 2 days the patient remains in the hospital under the constant supervision of the doctor and nursing staff. On the third day the patient is examined, drains are removed and bandaged. In a satisfactory condition the patient is discharged home. It is important to follow all the doctor's recommendations so that the rehabilitation process goes as quickly and smoothly as possible.

You must wear compression underwear around the clock for a month, and then wear it in the daytime for another month. For the same period exclude sports and heavy loads, stress, lifting weights.

After two weeks, the stitches are removed, after which you are allowed to take a bath or shower. The stitches heal completely within a month and a half to two months. In the first month, you should only sleep on your back with an extra pillow, then you can sleep on your side. The result of plastic surgery can be assessed after 2-3 months.
